You change phones and your car's history stays safe where it always was

You change phones. New phone, new screen, maybe even a new operating system. You make sure you have the photos, the contacts, the apps you use every day. And at some point a thought stops you: what about the car’s history?

It’s not an irrational fear. It’s a file you’ve been building over months or years. Dates, kilometers, workshop invoices, notes that only you know matter. Losing that isn’t a minor inconvenience.

The good news is that if you know where your data really lives, changing phones isn’t a problem.

Your data isn’t on your phone

This is the part most people don’t know: the maintenance history you record in OwnAutoCare isn’t saved inside your phone. It’s saved in your Google Drive or in your iCloud, depending on which account you’ve connected.

That changes everything. If the data were on the device, changing phones would mean export, move, import, pray that nothing gets corrupted along the way. But since it’s in your personal cloud, the process is much simpler: you install the app on your new phone, sign in with the same Google or Apple account, and the app finds the history exactly where you left it.

No intermediate steps. Nothing lost. The device change doesn’t interrupt anything.

The case of the jump between systems: iPhone to Android or vice versa

Here there is a small difference worth understanding.

If you go from one iPhone to another iPhone, or from one Android to another Android, everything is transparent: same account, same storage, same app. You sign in and you’re done.

The jump between ecosystems is different because iCloud only works on iOS and macOS. If you had your data in iCloud and you switch to Android, you can’t directly connect your iCloud to the new device.

For that scenario, the function to export the history as a ZIP file is your solution. Before making the change, you export from your iPhone or Mac. That ZIP includes all records and the attached invoice photos. You save it wherever you prefer—in Google Drive, on a computer, on an external drive—and when your new Android is ready, you import that file in the app. The history appears complete, with all the photos, as if you’d never changed devices.

What the ZIP contains and what it’s for

The export isn’t just a text backup. The ZIP file includes your complete vehicle history: every service with its date, kilometers and cost, and the photos of the invoices you’ve attached to each record.

That makes it useful in more situations than just changing phones:

  • Local backup. If you want to have a physical copy on your computer or on a hard drive, independent of any cloud, the ZIP is that.
  • Share the history. If you sell the car and the buyer wants to see the complete history, you can export it and pass it to them directly. If they also use OwnAutoCare, they import it and have everything from day one. If they don’t use it, the invoice photos inside the ZIP are still real and verifiable documents.
  • Peace of mind with a copy elsewhere. Having the data in Google Drive or iCloud already means you have a redundant copy. The ZIP is an extra layer if you want to make sure that no cloud account issue leaves you without a history.

Before changing phones: a quick check

There’s no need to do anything complicated. Before changing phones, it’s worth checking two things:

First, confirm that sync with your cloud account is active and up to date. If you haven’t opened the app in a while, open it, verify that the latest records are synced, and close it.

Second, if you’re going to switch ecosystems, do the ZIP export at that moment, while you still have comfortable access to the original device. Don’t wait to have the new phone in your hand to remember.

With that, changing phones goes from being a source of anxiety to being a consequence-free task for your history.

Your car’s history is one of those assets that build slowly and can be lost quickly. Having it in your own cloud, with the ability to export it when you need it, means the device is expendable. The data is not.
